Frederico, besides being a great enthusiast of languages and cultures, is also an entrepreneur and owner of Retrox Vintage Shop, located in the center of Lisbon. Fluent in English, Spanish and currently learning French with us, her language learning story is inspiring and illustrates how immersion and constant practice are fundamental in the learning process.

The beginning: From traveling to the need to learn English

Frederico's passion for languages began when he began his travels. Although he had acquired a basic knowledge of English at school, it was while travelling that he realised the need to improve his command of the language in order to communicate more effectively. Contact with different cultures was crucial to his development. Furthermore, the desire to be able to read his favourite authors, such as Anglo-Saxon writers, in their original language was a great motivation. Frederico became self-taught in this process, but it was over time that his English improved, especially due to the constant practice of communication during his travels.

Spanish: An unexpected learning experience

Learning Spanish followed a different path. Frederico never attended formal Spanish classes, but while living in Brazil, he was constantly exposed to the language, particularly through his interactions with Argentinians. Daily contact with Spanish, combined with reading books in the language, meant that he absorbed the language almost effortlessly. Frederico believes that the proximity between Spanish and Portuguese made the process much easier. However, when he traveled to Argentina, he realized that he needed to make a more active effort to speak the language fluently. Over time, he managed to reach the desired level of fluency.

French: New challenges and motivations

Frederico is currently learning French in a structured way at Fun Languages Almada. His motivation? The desire to read classics of French literature and to immerse himself in the country’s culture. Although the process of learning French is more formal and challenging than learning English or Spanish, Frederico is determined to achieve his goals. One of the most significant milestones he has achieved is being able to read his first book in French from start to finish, which he considers a great achievement.

The communicative approach of French classes at Fun Languages, where the language is spoken exclusively during class, has been a big differentiator for Frederico. He emphasizes that total immersion is essential for progress, especially when it comes to developing the ability to speak and understand the language in a practical way.

Frederico's advice for those who want to learn languages

Frederico shared three valuable pieces of advice for those who are starting to learn a new language:

Find your personal motivation – Whether it’s reading books, traveling or talking to other people, it’s essential to have a clear goal that motivates you to continue learning.

Dedication and constant practice – Learning a language takes time and effort. Immersion and daily practice, whether speaking with native speakers or listening to the language, are essential for progress.

Language immersion – Read simple books, watch films or series in the language you are learning (preferably without subtitles or with subtitles in the original language). This will help you familiarize yourself with the rhythm and vocabulary of the language.

Frederico’s journey shows that learning languages is not just about memorizing vocabulary or grammar, but about connecting with other cultures, understanding new perspectives and opening doors to the world. His story is a clear example of how immersion, constant practice and personal motivation are essential for successful language learning.

If you also want to learn a new language, remember Frederico's words: “Motivation is the first step, but dedication and constant practice are what really make the difference.”

Listen here the episode on Spotify or watch here on Youtube.

No episódio mais recente do nosso podcast Aprender Línguas Sem Complicações, tivemos o prazer de conversar com Frederico Lima, membro da nossa equipa na Fun Languages Almada.
